British author, Rob Sinclair’s second book in the Enemy Series, Rise of the Enemy, finds protagonist Carl Logan, who works for the Joint Intelligence Agency, on a mission to get information from the Russians. While he and a fellow spy are meeting with the Russians, they are captured, his partner is presumably killed, and he is tortured and held for over three months. Logan is puzzled as to why his boss and mentor, Mackie, has not tried to rescue him, and deduces that he is now on his own. It seems that his own agency has set him up, and he is on his own to get out of this debacle.
Rise of the Enemy is fast-moving, well-written, and has enough suspense to keep readers on the edge of their seats. The Russians are doing an excellent job of brainwashing Logan, and convincing him that his own agency has set him up. Once he escapes his captors, his agency tries to get him to come in, but he knows that he will be killed, since there are several events that don’t quite add up, and several incidents where he barely escapes death. Readers will be in the dark as to who the good guys and the bad guys are.
The book has an interesting format, in that the story is told through flashbacks of Logan’s time in captivity, coupled with what is actually happening as the story unfolds. It will be difficult for readers to guess what is reality, and that definitely gives incentive to keep reading.
There are several events from the first book in the series, Dance with the Enemy that are mentioned in this book, and it is recommended that readers read that one first. However, it is not absolutely mandatory, since most things are explained so that readers won’t be confused. As with most spy novels, some of the incidents are not quite believable, and sometimes when the main character escapes death, it is a bit implausible. However, it’s nice when he survives, and in this book, it will be a miracle if Logan does so.
Readers who enjoy spy, espionage thrillers will enjoy this book, and will look forward to the subsequent books in the series.
