Flipped for Murder, Maddie Day’s first installment in the Country Store Mystery Series, introduces Robbie Jordan, who has just moved to a very small Indiana town and opened a country store, called Pans ‘N Pancakes. Robbie is a newcomer to this town of South Lick, Indiana, and has experienced nothing but difficulty getting her store up and running, due to a very unpleasant mayor’s assistant, Stella. Unfortunately, Stella is found murdered with one of Robbie’s distinctive cheese biscuits in her mouth, and Robbie is the number one suspect.

Luckily, Robbie’s Aunt lives in town and is willing to help Robbie, as well as some of her friends. As they investigate the murder with the intention of getting Robbie off the suspect list, there are several not-so-subtle attempts on Robbie’s life.

Sometimes it’s fun to read a suspenseful cozy when we’re not in the mood for a major thriller or are short on time. This fun, well-written novel is light, humorous, and even has a few recipes for the foodies who thrive on culinary mysteries. And while this is not an involved thriller, it is quite suspenseful, has a surprise ending, and definitely keeps the reader interested.

Day is quite adept at making Robbie, her new boyfriend, Jim, and Aunt Adele likeable characters who seem like real people. There is a definite small-town ambience in the story, where everybody knows everybody’s business. Anybody who’s familiar with a small town will relate. Since there is no profanity, sex, or graphic violence, this novel is suitable for any age. It is recommended for readers who prefer fast, easy-to-read novels, and those who like to cook something before settling down for a few hours of light reading.
