Beautiful Losers is the first installment in the Kim Slade series by Eve Seymore. Kim is a clinical psychologist specializing in helping clients with eating disorders. Personally, Kim was injured in an accident when she was a child, and has a scar on her face that is quite noticeable. She is being stalked, and believes it is by a former model who was injured in a street brawl and now has been disfigured to the point of looking almost like a monster.

As the story progresses, there are twists and turns, and Kim is endangered. However, things are not as they seem, and the “bad guys” are not those that readers will expect. Luckily, Eve is comfortable and confident in her long-term relationship, where she divides her time between her home in Devon (weekends) and her home in Cheltenham where she takes care of her clients.

The actual storyline of Beautiful Losers is different than expected, since Kim’s profession and the book title take a back seat to what is actually happening in her life, and the fact that she is being stalked. Kim’s disfigurement doesn’t bother her, and she has a boyfriend, Chris, who loves her unconditionally and thinks she’s beautiful, so she thinks things are good on the home front.

The story takes place in England – Seymore is a British author – and that adds charm to the book. Seymore’s writing is good, and the scenarios make sense. There are no issues that aren’t resolved by the end of the book, and the ending is an unexpected surprise. Kim is a likeable character, and Seymore skillfully builds information on her traits throughout the novel, adding new attributes, so that some things about Slade remain a mystery until the end.

All-in-all, this is an excellent novel to introduce a series, and one that is easy to read. For those readers who are looking for a fast-moving novel with good characters, plenty of suspense, and twists and turns, this novel is recommended
