Gosford Park
It’s murder and mayhem when a group of the wealthy (and not so wealthy) gathers with their servants at an estate in the English countryside. When William McCordle is found poisoned and stabbed, a search for the real culprit begins. Here are a few movie mistakes to look for while watching “Gosford Park”.
∙ At the beginning of the movie, when Constance Trentham and Mary Maceachran are in the car, Lady Trentham knocks on the glass partition. In the back view of Mary, she is shown turning and looking at Lady Trentham over her right shoulder. But in the next front view, Mary is looking at her over her left shoulder.
∙ Lady Trentham and Mabel Nesbitt are talking in one of the sitting rooms. In the close-up of the two women, when Lady Trentham talks about “breaking in a new maid”, Freddie Nesbitt is behind Lady Trentham and he sets his cup and saucer on the stand to his right. In the following wider view, where Lady Sylvia McCordle can be seen, Freddie is setting the cup and saucer down again.
∙ Henry Denton gets hot coffee spilled in his lap in the sitting room. Henry gets angry and leaves the room. In the wider view, Lady Trentham is holding the newspaper open in front of her. It cuts to a close-up of her and the newspaper is closed. She is shown opening it.
∙ Inspector Thompson enters the servants’ quarters. The door remains open, even when Mrs. Wilson is talking to him. But when Mrs. Croft enters the room, she has to open the door first.
∙ Near the end of the movie, everyone is leaving the house. Lady Trentham is in her room with Mary and Lady Sylvia. She is never shown wearing a scarf. But, when she sits down at the vanity, she hands Mary a scarf. A few moments later, Lady Trentham takes off the same scarf.
“Gosford Park” (2001) stars Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Kristin Scott Thomas, Camilla Rutherford, Ryan Phillippe, Stephen Fry, Kelly Macdonald, Clive Owen, Helen Mirren, Eileen Watkins and Emily Watson. It runs 137 minutes and is rated R for some language and brief sensuality.
