Wow! According to Nisha Katona in her cookbook Pimp My Rice, there are over 40,000 varieties of rice. Luckily, she includes recipes only for those types that are easy to find. Most of the varieties covered in the book, in fact, are available in larger grocery stores and Asian markets. This cookbook goes way beyond the usual recipes that contain rice or are dishes that are served over rice; it explains more than anyone really wants to know about rice – growing, preparing, storing, etc., but in such a way that it is perfect to sit back and just read and enjoy. Katona has a delightful sense of humor, and readers will find themselves laughing while drooling over the mouthwatering recipes. The pictures are fabulous, and will definitely inspire everyone to make something with rice right now.
The book contains everything a good cookbook should have: table of contents, detailed index, beautiful color pictures, innovative and unique recipes, interesting historical facts, and how-to instructions for buying, storing, and cooking rice. Katona makes comments on each recipe and she gives many of the dishes humorous names, such as The Happy Hippy, where she comments that “I always imagine that true hippies and good Presbyterians have a bowl of leftover, morally airtight, always-a-bridesmaid brown rice in the refrigerator.”
Since there was still a little rhubarb in my garden, I tried the Ginger Beer Rhubarb Rice; delicious! The Beefed-Up Bibimbap is to die for, and I couldn’t resist A Thai Goodbye for a yummy light dessert with fruit.
The recipes in Pimp My Rice not only cover Asian countries like Japan, China, Korea, Indonesia, India, etc., but Katona includes Italian, English, Spanish, Cajun, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and there is even a Transylvanian Meatloaf. There are recipes for every meal course, and there is something for everyone, even picky eaters. The recipes are set out with concise, easy-to-understand instructions, so even beginning cooks will be able to make the recipes perfectly.
The bottom line is Yum! This book is highly recommended for both reading and cooking.
