Be Afraid Review

Be Afraid Review
Jonas Tuttle was a thrill seeker who had wanted to experience the highest of highs a person could feel since he was a young boy. Unfortunately, the anticipation and the act itself ended all too soon. As powerful as the high was he realized the thrill hadn’t lasted long enough – he wanted more.

New to the homicide department, Detective Rick Morgan and his new partner, Detective Jake Bishop, along with Rick’s canine companion Tracker, headed to a park where skeletonized remains of a child were found. The only clues are a pink blanket, baby teeth, and park records showing the body could have been there as long as thirty years.

In an effort to find out who the child was, Rick contacted forensic artist Jenna Thompson who happened to be on leave from Baltimore police department while in Nashville searching for clues to the killer of her own family when Jenna was a child. She agreed to work with the police because she wanted to bring closure to the young victim.

In the meantime, Rick and Jake were called to a home where they found a body of a woman who was killed before the house was set on fire. As Rick continued to search for leads in the two murders, he found himself drawn to the mysterious artist.

Author Mary Burton has created an intense four novel series featuring the Morgan family of Nashville, Tennessee. Be Afraid is the second novel following Cover Your Eyes. Burton has published twenty-six novels and five novellas. Although this is a series, the first two stories easily stand alone, each featuring a different Morgan brother.

The book starts with a disturbing but effective prologue that sets the stage for the rest of the story. It’s easy to get caught up in the storyline and many readers will be turning pages to see what happens next. And, there is plenty to see.

Attention to detail and vivid description of the various characters will pull readers into the true to life thriller. The author filled her pages with edgy dialogue and a strong plotline that continues to build tension until the climatic end.
