Once Upon a Grind Review
It’s Fairy Tale Week in New York City and the Broadway and museums are getting in on the excitement. Clare Cosi is doing her share by getting her coffee truck ready for a Central Park festival by dressing it up in a Jack and the Beanstalk theme. Clare’s partner donates a bag of coffee beans that are supposed to have some sort of magical effects. He also wants Clare to get her fortune read.
Clare’s boyfriend, NYPD detective Mike Quinn is in Washington, D.C. when his children disappear during the festival. As he heads home, Clare follows a strange message while in a trance. Clare, with Matt’s help, brings the children safely back to the Festival staff. Clare heads back out to find the kids’ dog and stumbles across more than she bargained for – a body in a dense area of Central Park.
In the meantime, Matt is arrested for drugging a young woman, now recovering in a local hospital. Mike arrives and tries to get Matt’s case changed to Mike’s precinct. The arresting cops are causing major problems and are even threatening to arrest Clare as well. Mike, Clare, Matt, and more, join forces to stop a growing menace and solve a mystery reaching far more deeply, and more personally, than anyone could anticipate.
Once Upon a Grind is the fourteenth novel in the coffeehouse mystery series written by Cleo Coyle, a husband and wife team. They are also known for the five Haunted Bookshop Mysteries written as Alice Kimberly.
This story starts out at a rapid pace and never lets down with something going on every page. The October theme gives the authors an open door to spooky characters and setting; New York City and Central Park on a dark and scary night.
Most of the usual characters make an appearance as well as a number of new additions, and the new people each have their own role in keeping the story rapidly moving forward.
In spite of the subject matter, readers should enjoy the fast-paced, and sometimes fun, story despite the danger and deaths woven throughout. Fans of the authors will want to make sure this book is on their reading list.
