Forman Blocker likes cruises, especially when they're free. Unfortunately, his method for obtaining free cruises involves killing cruise passengers and assuming their identities. Of course, that means Blocker can also take the victim's assets, which has made him a very rich man. Fortunately, most criminals make a mistake or two, and in this case, Blocker leaves Jay Bridges alive; Bridges recovers and teams up with Salirah, a woman who was on the cruise with Blocker, to help expose him. Luckily, Salirah is attractive, and Blocker tries to pick her up; he is exposed, but not before he attempts several more murders. Catching Blocker and bringing him to justice is not an easy task, and Jay and Salirah just may lose their lives during the process.
Michael Don Fess is a fairly seasoned writer, with several suspense/thriller books on the market. While none are as yet best-sellers, they are quite well-written and Fess uses his imagination to come up with interesting scenarios and story lines. The Cruising Serial Killer has several minor, but obvious editing errors (such as follow instead of followed at location 64, and rent car instead of rental car at location 114); a professional editor is definitely needed, although most of the errors don't take away from the actual story.
Fess does a good job of establishing the personalities of his characters; Jay and Salirah are quite likeable, and of course, Forman Blocker, a psychopath, is typical of bad guys in novels everywhere. Fess is able to keep up the suspense throughout most of the novel, especially when Blocker finds out who is pursuing him and tries to kill them.
The Cruising Serial Killer is a fast, easy read. Some of the scenarios are predictable, but there are some surprises, also. There is no overt violence or profanity, so the book is suitable for thriller readers of most ages. This book is not destined to become a classic, but it is fun to read, nevertheless, and will be an enjoyable diversion from everyday boredom.
