Cats boost immunity
It’s not only apples that keep the doctor away. Recent studies show that cat ownership can have a positive influence on your immune system and overall health. Of course, that’s provided you are not allergic to cat dander.

Interacting with cats provides both social and health benefits, according to researchers. Early exposure to cats as an infant or young child can lead to fewer allergies. Youngsters with frequent exposure also were found to develop less upper respiratory problems.

Cat lovers in general get a boost in their immune system because of positive emotions they experience from playing with or cuddling their felines. As a cat owner, I know I feel less stressed and happier after petting or playing with my cat, Bailey.

Cats also can sense when their owners are sick and offer them company. I can attest to that as I dubbed my cat a “therapy cat” after I fractured my wrist last fall. He sat or slept near me and provided comfort during a difficult time. Even my dogs did not stay as close as Bailey. He slept as close as he could at night and tried to distract me at other times from my pain. I thought about getting him a little “therapy cat” vest. Another cat of mine, named Oreo, also offered similar “therapy” when I was sick.

Cats are playful, engaging animals that contribute to our good health and better immunity in many other ways. Cat owners have less depression and loneliness which benefit your overall health. My cat has nurtured me through many bouts of depression caused by dealing with health issues. He seems to sense when I am sad or upset, and offers comfort in the form of purring.

I have dogs who offer similar companionship but nothing beats a cat when it comes to their gentleness. They offer stress relief and a sense of comfort. All of which contribute to your overall sense of well being.

Dogs too can boost your immune system but you need to be ready for their boundless energy. Cats are more independent animals but are there for you when you need them.
