The Judge

The Judge
Hank Palmer is a ruthless city lawyer who avoids everything having to do with his childhood—including his family. But when he gets the news that his mother has died, Hank travels home where he is once again at odds with his father, the renowned judge, Joseph Palmer. Things come to a head, however, when the ailing judge is arrested for murder and has to have Hank defend him. Here are a few movie mistakes to look for while watching “The Judge”.

∙ After Hank and Joseph shake hands at the wake, Hank drives back to the house. As the car pulls up, there is a close-up view of Glen sitting on the porch. His tie is loose and hangs under both sides of his collar, down his shirt. Hank walks up on the porch with his suitcase and the tie is crooked and lays across Glen’s right arm. It falls straight down again when Hank tells them he’s going to shower.

∙ Hank opens the door to his old bedroom and sees it piled with junk. Dale comes by and puts a folded towel over his right shoulder. In the close-up of Dale and Hank when he says “it’s crazy”, the towel is folded neatly on his shoulder. Dale walks into the room and it cuts back to a front view of Hank where the towel has changed position on his shoulder. It now cover the side of his chest. The scene cuts to a right side view when Dale walks out and the towel on his shoulder has changed again. It cuts to a front view of Hank as he tosses his suitcase down and the towel isn’t on his shoulder—it’s in his right hand and he tosses it down.

∙ Hank is riding his old bike on the road and flips it. In the front view, when he yells “no”, the bike’s front tire is over the white line in the road. But in other views, it’s on the side of the road.

∙ Hank’s daughter, Lauren, comes to visit. When the two go for ice cream, Lauren’s scoop of ice cream is small at the beginning of the scene, when she says she wants to be racecar driver. It cuts to a left side view and the scoop of ice cream has gotten bigger.

∙ When Hank sits in the rocking chair on the porch and talks to his dad, his hands are empty and on the arms of the chair. It cuts to Joseph when he says “I don’t know, Henry”, and then back to Hank, who’s now holding a plastic cup in his left hand.

“The Judge” (2014) stars Robert Downey Jr., Robert Duvall, Vincent D’Onofrio, Billy Bob Thornton, Vera Farmiga, Jeremy Strong and Dax Shepard. It runs 141 minutes and is rated R for language including some sexual references.
