In the fourth novel of the Anna Curtis Series, A Good Killing, the town of Holly Grove is in an uproar over the death of a prominent high school coach. The car he was driving hit a wall and was burned with his body inside.
Jody Curtis always had a crush on her high-school coach, Owen Fowler. She wasn't alone; almost every girl had a crush on Coach Fowler, who was referred to by all as "Coach." He was a beloved and respected member of Holly Grove, a small town outside of Detroit, and that's why it is so shocking to residents when his death is found to be a murder. Jody, who allegedly was having an affair with the married Coach, is accused of his murder. Her sister, Anna, is a prosecutor living in Washington, DC, and returns to her hometown to help her sister out. Anna knows her sister is innocent (or is she?), but as she and Jody, with the help of a childhood friend, Cooper, try to discover who the real murderer is, they find that their lives are in danger, as residents are taking the law into their hands and will stop at nothing to avenge his death.
This book is fascinating, and is a testament to the problems faced in communities where politics overrule common sense and crimes go unpunished when the perpetrator is well-connected. Although this is a work of fiction, Leotta, who is a former federal sex-crimes prosecutor, places her characters in real-life scenarios. Her characters are well-developed, and readers will feel that they are real people who could easily be their neighbors and friends. The story is told in such a way that readers will have empathy for those who are victims, and will feel anger for those perpetrators who go unpunished.
Although this is the fourth book the series, readers will not feel out of the loop if they haven't read the previous books. However, the excellent writing style, the palpable suspense, and the unexpected ending will be reason enough for most to pick up everything Leotta has written. A Good Killing is highly recommended.
