Nadine Nunnelley has been teaching tatting for decades. Indeed, she is over 90 years old as of the printing of this new book, "Tatted Christmas Balls."

Planned with the student tatter in mind, Nadine A. Nunnelley's first book was a treasure house of basic instructions. It offered a solid foundation for learning the fundamentals of traditional tatting while encouraging the beginner to experiment with new techniques, too.

This new book focuses on removable or reusable tatted holiday ornament covers. Although non breakable plastic or satin covered styrofoam balls are available, the shiny glass balls show the tatted lace off to perfection. If the ornament breaks, a quick snip of the gathering thread at the neck frees the tatting. It may then be fitted to an new ornament and reused.

There are 15 patterns. Full color photos are shown for 12 of the patterns and 3 are black and white. The comb bound booklet is 8.5" x 11", with 31 pages and laminated front and back covers. The patterns have no diagrams but they are very easy to follow. A modified long hand style of writing out the directions was used.

For example, CH 6 ds,4 p sep by 5 ds, 5 ds, rw. Most modern patterns today use a simplified notation such as, i.e., CH 6 ( - 5 )x4, 5, rw.

Nadine Nunnelley herself is a fourth generation tatter. Her great-grandmother taught her mother to tat. However, she learned to tat only after retirement when she devoted time to learn this beautiful art. And now she has taught two daughters and a daughter-in-law, a nephew, a grandson and two great-granddaughters to tat. Add to that a vast number of students from the many educational institutions, stores, senior centers and even her own home and the number is astounding!

Note: I received this book as a gift from Nadine who has been my friend for many years. G. Seitz
