Fried Beef and Cheese Wontons Recipe
Here is a fun twist on fried wontons that is perfect for Cinco de Mayo. These beef and cheese filled crispy wontons make the perfect party treat.
½ lb. ground beef
4oz shredded taco cheese – Borden’s brand
¾ tsp garlic salt
1 tsp crushed red pepper
1 tbsp cornstarch
20 to 25 wonton wrappers
peanut oil for frying
½ lb. ground beef
4oz shredded taco cheese – Borden’s brand
¾ tsp garlic salt
1 tsp crushed red pepper
1 tbsp cornstarch
20 to 25 wonton wrappers
peanut oil for frying
- Brown the ground beef in a pan and drain it thoroughly.
- Then in a microwave safe bowl mix the browned ground beef and cheese together and then place it in the microwave for 40 seconds on high, just until the cheese melts. Melting the cheese makes this mixture easier to place inside the wontons.
- Next drain any oil from the mixture and then stir in the garlic salt and the crushed red pepper.
- Now to create a sealer for the wontons, mix together the cornstarch with some cold water in a small bowl. Stir until the cornstarch dissolves.
- Now you can start filling the wontons. First set up a work area with the wrappers, sealer, and two plates. One plate to wrap on and the other on which to place the finished wontons. Also, cover the wonton wrappers with a damp paper towel so they don’t dry out.
- Then start wrapping. Place a wrapper on a plate and add about one teaspoon of the filling right in the center of the wrapper. Next, dip your finger in the cornstarch mixture and wet all of the edges of the wrapper. Then fold the wrapper over the filling to create a triangle shape and press the edges firmly to seal them, making sure to press all of the air out from the filling area. Then place the finished wonton on a plate and continue filling the remaining wrappers.
- Once all of the wontons are filled, heat about 2½ cups of peanut oil on high, you may need more or less oil depending on the size of your wok.
- When the oil is hot (350F,) add the wontons in batches and let them cook for about 3 to 5 minutes, or until they are brown. Make sure to not over crowd the wok. I usually cook about 7 to 9 of these wontons at a time. This number may differ depending on the size of your wok.
- Once they are nicely browned remove them with a slotted spoon, draining off any excess oil, and place them on a plate. Then continue frying the remaining wontons.
- Once they are all fried, serve them immediately, enjoy.
