Avoidable Contact Review
Racecar driver Kate Reilly has arrived at the 24 Hours of Daytona and is ready to take her turn in the challenging endurance race. Unfortunately, before the race can get started Stuart Telardy, Kate’s boyfriend and the Series Vice President of Operations, is involved in a hit-and-run accident that leaves him in critical condition and in a coma.
During an investigation into the incident, local police detectives determine it was not an accident, but that Stuart was hit on purpose by someone connected with the race.
Kate was particularly upset because the couple had argued prior to the incident, especially because she had questioned their relationship. As shocked and worried as she was as Stuart clung to life, Kate chose to continue to drive in her leg of the race.
Leaning on her best friend and assistant, Holly, and hooking up with an investigative reporter who could provide further information, Kate sought to find the truth amidst numerous lies and false leads in order to find out who was desperate enough to kill to keep a secret buried.
As she continued to look into the tragedy, Kate received mysterious texts from Stuart’s phone, found out her own estranged family members were hanging out with other teams, and worst of all, another tragedy hit the raceway before Kate could fulfill her own racing commitment.
Avoidable Contact, A Kate Reilly Mystery, was written by avid racing fan Tammy Kaehler, the third in the popular racing series following Dead Man’s Switch and Braking Points.
The mile-a-minute pace fits right in with the theme, and the author’s ability to create realistic scenes brings life to a story that is difficult to put down. To say it is a page-turner doesn’t quite do it justice. The story line races along with numerous twists and turns, unexpected upsets and plenty of danger.
Kaehler has done her homework providing a realistic insiders look at endurance racing. The characters are true to life, the high octane atmosphere creates a sense of urgency both because of the high stakes sought by the winner as well as bragging rights and monetary rewards.
