Gabriel Allon is back in another fascinating, well-researched adventure. This is the 14th installment in Daniel Silva's bestselling series featuring Gabriel Allon, art restorer, assassin, and Israeli spy. While restoring a painting in Italy, Gabriel is asked to take a break and help the police recover a stolen Caravaggio painting worth millions. Gabriel declines until he learns that Jack Bradshaw, a former British diplomat and art broker who deals in stolen goods, is found brutally murdered in his Lake Como home; Gabriel's friend Julian Isherwood discovers the body and becomes a possible suspect; Gabriel has no choice but to come to the rescue of his friend. Gabriel must not only find the missing painting, but also enter the world of not-so-honest brokers who deal in stolen paintings to find the real murderer.
As is the norm in this series, Gabriel is in danger during most of the novel, as well as his wife, Chiara, and his associates. There are twists and turns throughout, and surprises at the end. One of the best things about Silva's writing is that it is carefully researched and his stories are intertwined with facts. So, by reading his excellent novels, readers will not only be able to enjoy a great story, but also learn some facts. In The Heist, there is a detailed explanation at the end letting readers know what is fiction and what is fact.
Daniel Silva is a bestselling author for good reason: his characters are believable and seem to be real, his writing style is easy to read and understand, he researches history and politics so that the scenarios ring true, and his storylines are fascinating. Silva does not generate a new cookie cutter novel every six months or so like some bestselling authors – rather, he takes his time and the end results are high quality novels. For those who are not familiar with Silva's previous novels, it is suggested that they be read in order, since his characters evolve and change; The Heist is highly recommended.
