Muzzled Review
Dr. Kate Turner had recently begun to work at the Oak Falls Veterinary Hospital in upstate New York’s Hudson Valley. She worked at an animal clinic that made house calls, and often had several stops each day.
While her boss Doc Anderson was traveling around the world, Kate was in charge, working closely beside the office staff. She had only worked at the clinic for a few months when one of her stops rattled her to the core. She found the bodies of an elderly couple in their home, apparently dead from gunshot wounds.
The couple was active dog breeders currently with twenty-seven dogs. During the investigation it was determined that their grand champion, Charles Too, was missing. Shortly after the killings the couple’s estranged daughter arrived in town and took four of the top dogs, letting the rest of them go with a total disregard of what her parents would have wished.
Local law enforcers determined it was a murder/suicide, but Kate believed otherwise. When another show dog related death pointed toward Kate, she found herself the main suspect in the murders.
Seeking tips from her grandfather, a retired New York Fire Department arson investigator, she decided she better find out who the murderer was before she ended up in jail, or worse.
What she found was a varied list of suspects, any of whom had reasons to want the elderly couple dead in the cut throat world of show dogs.
But could Kate find the murderer amongst a growing number of suspects before she was the next victim?
Muzzled, A Kate Turner, D.V.M Mystery, is the first novel written by Eileen Brady and the first in a new series that looks to be a success. The author was a veterinarian for more than twenty-five years and successfully uses her knowledge and experience to create an authentic mystery.
The author takes her time laying out the landscape of the small town while keeping a solid pace and pages turning until the surprise, satisfying ending. The characters are well-formed and realistic, building toward further stories in the pet noir style starring the appealing Kate Turner.
I’ve read many first novels, and Muzzled is one of the best I’ve experienced. We are very much looking forward to more mystery stories about Kate Turner from Eileen Brady’s pen through her small town tales.
