Cheap Eats in Japan - Cold Udon Noodles

Guest Author - Taisha Turner

The cheap eats, udon noodles, originate in Japan. They consist of flour, salt and water. The white udon noodles are wider and flatter than soba noodles. Yet, like soba noodles they are eaten and loved by the people of Japan, therefore an easy find for the budget traveler in Japan. On every other corner, noodle shops' cheap eats are found.

In the summer, udon noodles are commonly eaten cold. The boiled noddles are chilled. The cold udon noodles are served with a thin sauce or soup called mentsuyu for dipping. The mentsuyu flavors the noodles. Green onions, tempura, fried tofu, bamboo shoots, and vegetables are types of the toppings which may be ordered. Of course, various fish and meats are on the noodle menu.

The Japanese love these cheap eats which are a nonfat dish when vegetarian. Cold udon noodles are touted as healthy and good for the budget traveler and expatriate. A choice of vegetables or other equally healthy topping is a great way to enjoy the traditional Japanese food. There is no need for the tourist in Japan to stray from their low fat diet while enjoying the cold udon noodles.

The cook at home can easily prepare a bowl of cold udon noodles. Boil the noodles just like any other noodles. Mentsuya is easy to prepare or purchase a bottle of the sauce.
