Do's and Don'ts When Visiting A Shinto Shrine

Guest Author - Taisha Turner

The protocol for visiting a Shinto shrine is not complicated. Here are the rules for the first time visitor.

1. Dress appropriately. Westerners dress as going to a church, temple or mosque. No shorts or tank tops.

2. Walk along the path through the Torii Gate.

3. At the Temizusha (a stone basin), rinse your month and hands with the water.

4. Drink some water using the dipper. Do not directly touch your mouth with the dipper.

5. Walk to main Shinto shrine building.

6. Toss some coins in the offering box.

7. Bow twice in front of the Shinto shrine’s entrance.

8. Clap your hands twice.

9. Bow once again.

10. Walk into the Shinto shrine.

Enjoy your visit. Remember the Shinto shrine is a sacred place.

Tokyo For Free is a great book for anyone planning a trip to the city. There are many shrines listed and described including details on which subways to travel to reach them. It does not only list the major ones but the small, hidden neighborhood shrines.

While visiting a Shinto shrine, have your fortune told. Purchase an incense stick for a great souvenir.
