Chapter 6, Draco’s Detour, in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince opens with strange happenings in the wizards’ world. Bill and Mr. Weasley share information with the family and guests. Remus Lupin tells of Dementors attacks. Everything is in an uproar.
The young people receive their list of necessary school items. Mrs. Weasley does not want to go shopping without Mr. Weasley’s presence. She fears for the safety of the students and herself.
Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Weasley along with Harry, Ron, Ginny and Hermione go to complete the back-to-school shopping. Rubeus Hagrid joins them outside the Leaky Cauldron.
Diagon Alley, the main shopping street, has changed. Shops are closed. Not many people are walking the cobbled-stones. Purple posters with security instructions, cover shop windows. Wanted Posters for Death Eaters cover buildings. There is one new business, a stall selling amulets effective supposedly against the evil ones.
Mrs. Weasley and the students complete their school purchases. Harry, Ron and Hermione run into Draco Malfoy and his mother, Narcissa in the robe emporium. Of course, Draco insults Hermione by calling her mud-blood. Ron and Harry draw their wands. There is a short stand-off until Draco leaves the shop without buying anything.
Everyone meets back together. They go off in search of the Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. It is the joke store Fred and George runs. The place is colorful and a success. Everyone wanders about the store exploring the inventory.
Harry and his two friends see Draco walking down the street alone. They believe he is planning mischief. Using the Invisibility Cloak, the three follow Draco. He stops in Mr. Borgin’s shop. They are not able to learn Draco’ intentions.
