Southeast Asia Visa and Passport Requirements - Vietnam
A visa and passport are needed for travel in Vietnam. The traveler is required to have a valid passport issued by their country of origin and not to expire while in the country. Simply apply to the local government.
It is no longer necessary to book a tour to receive a visa for entry and exit. The independent traveler can receive a visa by completing the visa form in triplicate and having three passport photographs. Send one copy to the closest Vietnam embassy or consulate before leaving. Bring the other two applications and photographs along with the stamped visa from the Vietnam government and hand the two not stamped ones over when entering the country.

Invest in a passport holder. I prefer the kind which is waterproof and worn as belt around the waist. It is worn under your clothes and not seen by others. The holder is divided into separate compartments for passport, money and credit cards. It is so comfortable the wearer can sleep with it around the waist.
The type which hangs about the neck invites trouble and who wants someone pulling on a strong cord around the neck. Remember to only carry the amount of money needed for the day’s activities in your pocket and the rest placed safely away.
