The Fall Reality TV Lineup
Networks have made their picks for returning shows and new ones to come.
In the wake of the ongoing writers' strike, networks are hustling and bustling to get more reality programming on the air waves. Expect some familiar shows such as "American Idol" to return in January, and some new ones as well. While some have no firm dates attached, here is the skinny:
ABC TV
Returning Shows: "The Bachelor" - "Dancing With the Stars" - "Supernanny" - "Wife Swap" - "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition"
New Shows: "Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann" -- Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba of "Dancing With the Stars" are the choreographers who will coach competing dance teams through a new routine each week. Viewers will choose a favorite between Inaba's and Tonioli's teams, with the losing coach having to eliminate a troupe member.
"Duel" is a new game show where contestants battle head to head to win a "big money jackpot." This may start as soon as December.
"Wanna Bet?" -- Celebrities bet on stunt-performing contestants.
"The Big Give" -- From Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Productions, the show centers on the competition, drama and emotion as millions of dollars are given away to make a difference in people's lives.
"Just for Laughs" – the old hidden-camera trick brings us humorous situations that are meant to appeals to all.
"Here Come the Newlyweds" -- Newly married couples compete for a cash prize – much like the old “Newlywed Game”.
CBS TV
New Shows: "Million Dollar Password" – like the old "Password", here two teams of one celebrity and one contestant have to guess a password revealed only to the studio audience and viewers at home. Philbin is the host.
"Power of 10" is a high-stakes $10 million game that challenges contestants to guess the behaviors, opinions and lifestyle choices of the American public.
"Do You Trust ME?" -- Hosted by Carlson, this game show will be asking strangers how much they trust each other – and bet on it.
CW Network
Returning Shows: "America's Next Top Model" - "Beauty & the Geek" - "Pussycat Dolls 2: Girlicious."
New Shows: "Farmer Wants a Wife" -- A British import, this series pairs up a farmer / rancher with a city girl. Seems like Beauty and the Geek down home on the range.
Crowned: The Mother of all Pageants" – Here hovering backstage mothers can compete right along with their daughters to win a beauty pageant.
FOX Network
Returning Shows: "American Idol" - "Don't Forget the Lyrics" - "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?"
New shows: "Moment of Truth" – coming from Colombia and not the UK this time, contestants are hooked up to a polygraph and then 21 personal questions are asked. If the embarrassment is survived, the prize is $500,000.
"When Women Rule the World" – a different take on society much like CBS’ Kid Nation, this one explores a world where women rule. Taking place in a remote and primitive location, the women will have the opportunity to "rule" as they build a newly formed society.
NBC TV
Returning Shows: "The Singing Bee" - "1 vs. 100" - "The Biggest Loser" - "Deal or No Deal" - "Celebrity Apprentice."
New Shows: "American Gladiators" – In this show hosted by Hulk Hogan, four men and four women gladiators select contestant made up of weekend warriors who take pride in their fitness and want to test their physical ability
"Amne$ia" is a new humorous game show where contestants have to answer questions about their own lives for money and prizes. With Dennis Miller as the host, this may be a worth a look.
"My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad" takes us back to grammar school as Dads compete with their families in stunt-type challenges.
"Clash of the Choirs" has celebrities going back to their hometowns to put together amateur singing groups which will then compete against each other.
"Baby Borrowers" deals with couples aged 16 to 19 and has them play house, as it were - to set up a home and start caring first to a baby, then a toddler, pre-teen and grandparents, and all in one month.
"Most Outrageous Moments" – another bloopers type of show that presents funny clips from TV.
