Yankee Candle - The Scenter of the Universe

Guest Author - Brenda Potter Reynolds

The Yankee Candle Shop is located in South Deerfield, Massachusetts just off Route 91 at Exit 24. At the exit, take Route 5 & 10 North for 1/4 mile, and Yankee Candle will be on your left. Click for a map

Nutcracker CastleThe shop has twenty some odd rooms to browse through - each has it's own theme. The Bavarian Christmas Village Room has a giant rotating tree that is redecorated frequently during the year in a different theme. You can find Santa working on toys in Santa's Toy Factory. There are lots of things to buy - ornaments, decorations, garden items, lotions, and of course candles. You may want to consider taking out a small personal loan before visiting.

One of my favorite places is the candlemaking museum. They have a demonstration a few times a day about how candles were made out of tallow, bayberries, and bees wax back in colonial days. The people working the museum tell you about the lifestyles of the people who made these candles. Generally, they sprinkle period antedotes and tidbits through out their demonstrations which is always very interesting. You can buy bayberry and bees wax candles right there in the musuem.

Dip Your Own CandlesAnother favorite place is the Dip Your Own Candles station. You can purchase all sorts of white candles to dip into hot colored wax. This is a "must do" you'll probably regret it if you don't dip your own candles. They have instructions to create rainbow colored candles, too.

Sampler CandlesNear the dipping station is a large area of sampler candles. These are votive sized candles and they have just about every imaginable scent here. If you can't figure out which candle to buy this is a great place to try out a few scents at home. You can pick and choose through the rows and baskets of candles - sniffing at each one if you like. A box of 18 samplers is under $20 and is your best buy, otherwise individual sampler candles are about $1.40 each.

The Yankee Candle shop does have it's own restaurant called Chandler's if you find you need to stop shopping and sit down for a meal. There is also the Coffee Haus near the Bavarian Christmas Village where you can get a yummy pastry and something to drink.

GeorgiosIf you choose not to eat at the Yankee Candle shop there is a nice little restaurant not far from the shop called Georgios Restaurant & Pizzaria where the prices are reasonable and the food is excellent. Click for a map
