South Dakota– 12” Quilt Block
Fabrics:
There are three fabrics used in this block, described as light, medium and dark
Light Fabric: 
Cutting Instructions
Medium Fabric:
- cut ten 2⅜” squares (C),
- cut two 3” squares (E)
Dark Fabric:
- cut four 3½” squares (A),
- cut six 3” squares (D).
Step 1.
Let’s make the B/C half square triangles (HST) first. Place one B (light fabric) square onto a C (medium fabric) square, right sides together and mark a line on the light fabric diagonally from corner to opposite corner. See diagram.
Tip: Lightly spray on the right sides of each square, and press these squres together with a hot iron. The spray starch holds the squares together, avoiding pinning and possibly skewing the two blocks whilst you sew.
Sew a ¼” seam on both sides of the drawn line. Then cut on the line to form two half Square triangles (HTS) each measuring 2”. Now create another 19 HSTs using the B/C pieces.
Step 2.
Let’s make the E/F half square triangles HST. Place one F (light fabric) square onto one E (medium fabric) square, right sides together and mark a line on the light fabric diagonally from corner to opposite corner. Follow the Tip in Step 1. Sew a ¼” seam on both sides of the drawn line. Then cut on the line to form two HSTs. Now create another three HSTs using the E/F pieces.
Step 3.
Making the pinwheel blocks requires some accurate sewing. Pressing the seams flat will help to avoid a big bulky blob in the centre. Take four B/C HSTs and sew them together (see diagram).
Step 4.
Place the centre square together using the five pinwheel blocks and four A patches. Sew these together to form the centre square. (see diagram)
Step 5.
Corners. For each corner (that is identical) use one E/F HST, two G squares and three D triangles to create the corner. Sew four units. (see diagram).
Piecing the block together.
Place the centre square flat (see diagram) and sew the top and bottom corners to the top and bottom of the centre square. Press seams open. Sew the left and right corners to the left and right of the centre square. Press seams open
This block square should measure 12-1/2”
