1855 Classification of Medoc and Sauternes
This is the current list of the wineries classified in 1855, reflecting changes brought about by divisions of original properties and renaming, plus the elevation on 1973 of Château Mouton-Rothschild from the top of the Second Growths to the first.
The name of the winery is followed by its appellation. You’ll see the words Appellation Controlee surrounding the name of the appellation on the label. This helps avoid confusion when there are wines with a similar or identical name. For instance, Ch du Tertre is a Fifth growth chateau in the Margaux appellation, but there is another winery called Ch du Tertre in Bordeaux, in the Fronsac appellation.
Prices and quality generally reflect a wines position on the list.
Several of the wineries named below produce a ‘second’ label for bottles made from young vines and wines not considered of a quality for the first label. Second labels will use a different brand name and these wines are not considered ‘classed growth’ wines although second wines from top wineries are becoming increasingly in demand and their price reflects this.
