Sew Coats to Fit Madeline and Raggedy Ann

Guest Author - Susan Kramer

This coat will fit 15 inch (37.5cm) to 18 inch (45cm) dolls such as Madeline and Raggedy Ann. For clothes to fit 18 inch American Girl, Gotz Precious Day, Corolle and dolls with similar body types click here.

I rate this an intermediate skills project.

Sewing Instructions

The material I used is a plaid with a solid color bonded to the back. So, it could be reversible if you turned in and blind stitched all the seams.

Seams of one-fourth inch are included in pattern pieces.

Hems at lower edge of coat, lower edge of sleeves, and center front are one-half inch turned in twice and blind-stitched. To be sure about your doll, measure the arm length before hemming lower edge of sleeve.

Patch pockets are 3 inches by 3 inches square in the finished size. Sew to finished coat with blind-stitches or top-stitch very close to edge on pocket sides and lower edge.

To begin
Collar
Right sides together, stitch around all but neck edge, clip corners, turn right side out and press.

Coat
- Sew back to front shoulder seams, right sides together.
- Sew under side of collar to right side of coat, matching center back of collar with center back of coat.
- Finish neck edge with a 14-inch length of bias tape. See photo for guidance.
- Hem front edge of coat by turning in one half inch twice and blind stitch.

Sleeves
- Pin right side of one sleeve to right side of coat armhole and stitch in place, clip curves. Repeat with other sleeve.
- Try coat on doll and measure how long to make sleeve. Blind stitch hem at lower edge of sleeve.
- Now, with right sides of front and back coat facing, sew long seam from lower edge of sleeve to underarm and down to lower edge of coat in one operation.
- On lower edge of coat turn up hem one-half inch twice or to desired length and blind stitch.

Finishing
Attach velcro dot at center front. I do not use buttons on doll clothes because a child could bite off and swallow and choke on a button.

Enjoy this doll coat making project!
