Scrub Pants Sewing instructions
This week we will be sewing our scrub pants. I recommend that you sew by hand when making doll clothes; the seam allowances are much smaller than on larger projects and I always feel I have better control when sewing doll clothes if I sew by hand. This is particularly true when hemming these little pants.
These pants will fit American Girl, Gotz Precious Day, Madame Alexander and other full bodied 18 inch dolls. I made my pants with a draw string waist, for authenticity, but you can also make an elastic waist, if you prefer.
Begin by pinning and stitching the inseams of both legs, with right sides together. Then turn one leg right side out. Slide the leg that is right side out, inside the other leg so that the center seam edges line up. Pin the legs together. Starting at the back, sew the center seam from the waist at the back to within one inch of the waist, at the center front. The top one inch at the front is left open for the draw string.
In the open one inch, turn the seam allowance to the wrong side and stitch it in place. Hem the bottom of both legs by turning the bottoms up 1/4 inch, twice, and use a blind or hem stitch to hold it.
To make the waist band, turn the top edge down to the wrong side, 1/2 inch, twice. Stitch it down with tiny stitches, very close to the folded edge. Thread rug yarn, or other heavy weight yarn, through the waist band, leaving a long edge on each side of the center opening, and tie it in place when the pants are on the doll.
