Bowflex Dumbbells vs. Power Blocks

The two most popular brands of adjustable dumbbells are Select Tech Dumbbells by Bowflex and Power Blocks by Power Block. Both brands can be used for a variety of total body exercises and fitness goals. They can also replace an entire rack of dumbbells and save you time and money in the long run. The main differences are size, shape, features, ease of use and price.

Adjustable Dumbbells Size and Shape

Bowflex offers two models of dumbbells, the 552 dumbbells that adjust from 5 to 52.5 lbs. and the 1090 dumbbells that adjust from 10 to 90 lbs. Power Block offers 13 different models of Power Blocks that vary in size from 3-24 lbs, 5-130 lbs, and other sizes that you can create yourself with their expander kits.

The Bowflex dumbbells have a more traditional dumbbell shape with round weight plates that are larger in the center and smaller at the ends. Power Blocks are shaped into rectangular blocks that look like bricks. Choosing a shape is strictly a matter of preference and both products offer testimonials from satisfied consumers who enjoy working out with them.

Adjustable Dumbbell Features & Warranty

Power Block dumbbells are adjusted by sliding a pin into the side of the weights and can be combined with expanders and bars for increased durability. They are made of durable steel or urethane and are backed by a 10 and 15 year warranty. The Select Tech dumbbells are adjusted by turning dials on both ends of each weight and are made of cold rolled sheet steel and the dumbbells are covered with a unique injection-molded plastic. Bowflex offers a 2-year limited warranty on all parts, 5-year warranty on weight plates and 1-year warranty on labor.

Adjustable Dumbbell Ease of Use

Select Tech dumbbells require dialing in your desired weight on both ends of both dumbbells as well as racking your dumbbells each time you need to change your weight. Extra care must be taken when racking these dumbbells to avoid damage. Power Blocks require only one pin placement on each dumbbell to set the desired weight, do not require racking to adjust the weight, and are not as fragile. Ease of use depends on how you often you need to adjust your weight and how careful you want to be about doing that. Shape may or may not affect ease of use but that depends on what type of exercises you will be performing with your adjustable weights.

Newer Adjustable Dumbbell Options

There are many newer brands of adjustable dumbbells gaining popularity due to durability, price, and ease of use. Among these Stamina Versa-Bell, Weider Power Switch, and Bayou Adjustable Dumbbells are practical affordable options that get rave reviews by users. A few other brands that are popular with the heavier lifters are Iron Master and ProForm Pro Quick.
