Biography
Isabella Brady came into the world prematurely while Marlena was resting at the Horton Cabin. Fortunately for her and the baby, John Black and his wife Kristin Blake arrived just in time to help bring little Isabella into the world. Because of her strong emotional ties to John, Marlena named the baby after John's first wife, Isabella Toscana. She is named "Belle" for short. John had no idea at the time, but he was delivering his own daughter.
Sami, who was traumatized at seeing her mother having an affair with John, knew the baby was John's and decided that it would be better to sell her on the Black Market than to have her family destroyed. She took little Belle and called her Emily while they were on the run. Eventually, Belle's true paternity came out and Roman and she parted ways. Kristin was insanely jealous of Marlena and John's relationship and she hatched a plan to spike some chocolate with Penicillin. Unfortunately, Belle ate the chocolate and nearly died as she was also allergic to the drug.
Fast forward to the teenage years where she hung out was a group of other teen Salemites. She fell in love with her good friend Shawn Brady. However, fate stepped in repeatedly and kept the two apart. First, it was Jan Spears, then it was Jan Spears, then it was Cassie DiMera, and Jan Spears again and then Willow.
Finally, Belle decided he was not worth waiting for and agreed to marry Phillip. Right before the wedding, she and Shawn were in a barn fire and suffering from smoke inhalation and disorientation, they made love. Belle married Phillip and soon after, she found out she was pregnant - assuming it was Phillip's baby, since she had no recall of her night with Shawn.
Belle still had feelings for Shawn and she decided to tell Phillip that she wanted out of her marriage. It was a tumultuous time for her because she had been suffering from Post Partum Depression, then Phillip lost his leg in a Marine battle, and Claire became gravely ill.
Claire needed a liver transplant and a blood transfusion. Shawn was the only one who matched her blood type and she received her liver from Zach, Shawn's brother, who had recently died. Belle still did not know there was a question about Claire's paternity. Mimi suspected as much and secretly had a test done. She was the only one who knew the real truth. She tried to tell Shawn several times, but opted to sidestep the issue since he valued trust in a relationship. Mimi was scared she was going to lose Shawn. In the end, the truth came out and she did, in fact, lose Shawn.
Phillip ran off and left Belle and Shawn to repair a broken life together. He returned several months later having had reconstructive surgery and pursued custody of Claire. He paid a judge to grant him temporary custody. Belle and Shawn freaked out and took off with Claire. They ended up on a remote island called Tindu Lau. Phillip tracked them down and took Belle and Claire on a boat heading for Australia. Shawn followed them and climbed on board just as a storm hit. The three friends agreed to stop fighting for Claire's sake.
