Native American tribes are numerous throughout our lands. Animal symbolism may vary from tribe to tribe. Following are some basic attributes of animals from Bull to Coyote.

This series of articles also includes the spirit powers of birds, insects, and reptiles.

Bull

Muscular and aggressive, the bull has always been an important symbol in many cultures from the beginning of time. A bull will fight other bulls for superior status over the herd and reproductive rights. They do not forget their enemies. They are very aggressive and need careful handling to avoid danger to other animals as well as humans.

Symbolism: Insight to the past, fertility, rushing headlong into situations

Butterfly

Watching a butterfly gives one the sense of cheerfulness and joyful activity. They enjoy life as much as they can in their short life before they transform and re-emerge. They are brightly colored and the design pattern on their wings is symmetrical.

Symbolism: Transition, joy, dance of life, energy, balance, grace, ability to accept change

Cougar (Puma)

Native to America, the cougar has many names depending on it's region. It is also referred to as puma, mountain lion, mountain cat, catamount, or panther. With the exception of the jaguar, the cougar is larger than other cats the Americas. It is a solitary reclusive animal, full of grace and stealth. Only the females care for and train their young -- they are fiercely protective of their cubs, and have been seen to successfully fight off animals as large as grizzly bears in their defense.

Symbolism: independent, powerful, sensual, graceful, fast, stealth, leadership, loyal, courage, responsibility, foresight, spiritual companion

Coyote

The coyote is an old soul. It has been around north and central America, Panama, Mexico, Canada, and as far north as Alaska for over one million years or so. Born in the wild, it is not skittish about living and breeding in metropolitan areas. They travel in large groups and hunt in pairs. Their territory is usually about 10 - 12 miles and circles their around their dens and they follow fixed trails. They are fast when in pursuit and can jump quite high. They are very adaptable and seem to flourish when other canine species diminish.

Coyotes are quite intelligent and cunning. In many cultures they are considered a trickster, because of their cunning abilities. They take their parenting seriously and train their young well. They are very opportunistic and versatile. They seem to be happy and very mischievous little critters.

Symbolism: wisdom, intelligence, happiness, trickster, stealth, folly, guile, innocence
