The Most Fragrant Roses

The Most Fragrant Roses
Most rose fanciers appreciate the heady fragrance of their favorite flower, but not all roses are strongly scented. If you are planning on planting new roses this spring, why not choose at least one that offers not only beautiful flowers, but also the wonderful scent that makes roses so special?

Many roses are fragrant, but here are some that are outstanding for their perfume and also have gorgeous flowers.

Mr. Lincoln
It's hard to top Mr. Lincoln for all around magnificence. The deep red blossoms are perfectly formed, and the long, straight stems make them excellent for cutting. The strong fragrance is a pure rose scent, and the flowers are large, with many petals.

Mr. Lincoln was introduced in 1965, winning All American Rose Selection. A hybrid tea, Mr. Lincoln is susceptible to blackspot, but is a hardy variety overall.

Double Delight
This gorgeous rose boasts creamy white blooms with a deep, pinkish-red around the edges of the outer petals. As the flower ages, the red color increases. The blossoms are large, with many petals, and a very strong, spicy fragrance.

Double Delight is a hybrid tea, introduced in 1977, and winner of an All American Rose Selection award that year. It is one of the most widely planted roses, despite its susceptibility to mildew.

Fragrant Cloud
With its intense, coral-red color, Fragrant Cloud would be a knockout even without its powerful scent. But add in the strong citrus-fruity fragrance, the perfectly formed blossoms, and the ability to hold its color even in hot weather, and Fragrant Cloud becomes a rose every gardener should grow.

A hybrid tea, Fragrant Cloud won Gold Medal from the Royal National Rose Society in 1963, the year of its introduction. It is susceptible to mildew and blackspot.

Just Joey
The loosely formed flowers of Just Joey are a pure apricot orange, with a powerful, fruity fragrance. The ruffle-edged petals add to the delicate appearance of the blooms, but it is an excellent cut flower, with long, straight stems.

Just Joey is a hybrid tea introduced in 1972, and winner of World's Favorite Rose award in 1994. It is very disease-resistant, with a small size that makes it perfect for a garden with little room, or a large container.

Memorial Day
Pale pink flowers with a wash of lavender, and a very full, open bloom make Memorial Day a star. The pure rose fragrance is strong enough to perfume a room, and you will be able to cut flowers all season long.

Introduced in 2004, this hybrid tea won an All American Rose Selection award, and is very disease resistant.

Gertrude Jekyll
An English rose bred by David Austin, Gertrude Jekyll has the densely petaled, peony-shape that is typical of most David Austin roses. The glowing, pure pink color stands out in the garden, and the fragrance is powerful enough to scent the air all around the bush.

Left unpruned through the summer, Gertrude Jekyll can reach a height of 8 to 10 feet. It was introduced in the United States in 1990, and won the Award of Garden Merit in 1994.

There are so many beautiful roses, it is always hard to choose just one for your garden. Narrow the choices down by picking a rose that offers wonderful fragrance along with spectacular flowers, and you will be doubly thrilled to visit your rose garden.
