July 4, 1776 marks the day in history when we claimed our independence from England and Democracy was born. Our roots here in America extend from one corner of the globe to the other. Our ancestors immigrated here from many nations under many different circumstances.
Each day people voluntarily leave their homelands by the thousands to come to the "land of the free and the home of the brave" so they can begin their new life here in America.
The United States is truly a "Melting Pot" of many ethnic backgrounds all looking for their own personal "American Dream" but preserving and expressing their own cultural roots at the same time. The flag still stands for freedom and although there is inevitable turmoil in the world, we still stand for that freedom even within our cultural diversity.
We understand the blessing of having the freedom of speech. The First Amendment established that we would be assured of freedom of religion and freedom of speech. Some countries do not have these privileges and we are living in a land where we do have the power to speak, assemble and act.
It is part of the tradition each year here in America to celebrate that freedom and independence with barbecues, picnics, and family gatherings on the 4th of July. We will be celebrating while we also remember our armed service men and women who are fighting or stationed in other countries. May they be home soon.
I’d like to offer a few recipes here relating to the 4th of July theme while we are on the subject. Please feel free to share your favorites in the forum if you would like to so we might all try them.
