Colas Cause Kid's Headaches
Do your children complain of headaches? If so, caffeinated cola drinks may be the cause. Researchers found that 6 to 18 year old youngsters who drink the equivalent of two large colas a day suffer considerably more from chronic headaches and migraines than those who drank less or none at all.
Cola drinks are not only loaded with high glycemic sweeteners (a 20 oz. bottle of Coca Cola Classic has the equivalent of 18 teaspoons of refined sugar), making them prime promoters of obesity and tooth decay, but they also contain very high levels of caffeine (the same 20 oz. bottle of Coke has about 50 mgs. of caffeine), which is an addictive stimulant that’ll get your kids hooked and craving more.
Studies show that caffeine combined with sugar creates attention deficit problems and causes kids to climb the walls. It also changes your child’s brain blood chemistry causing chronic headaches and migraines. Other popular drinks like Mountain Dew, Mello Yello and Red Bull have even stronger caffeine concentration than colas. The bottom line is that caffeinated cola drinks are one of the worst things you can let your kids have. And the same goes for you.
There’s good news though. Once kids quit colas, headache pains usually disappear. They’ll probably lose weight too. The best thing you can do is get children to drink eight 8 oz. glasses of pure, clean water every day. There’s no caffeine and it’s non-fattening.
While it’s important to cut down on or eliminate cola drinks, realize that the caffeine withdrawal process can also cause headaches. To avoid these wean yourself or your child slowly by gradually diluting strong caffeine drinks with water.
