Avoid Diet Trends & Lose Weight Permanently

Have you noticed how many diet trends have hit the bookstore in the last few years? Low calorie diets, low fat diets, low carb diets, no carbs diets, no protein diets, high protein diet, real food diets, organic food diets, detox diets, celebrity diets, clean eating, paleo eating, the list goes on and on. If you’re desperate to lose weight jumping on the latest and greatest diet trend can be tempting but avoiding them might be a better option.

Diet Trends Are Only Ideas
The latest diet trend is based on a theory about the type of food your body needs to optimize health and reach your ideal weight. These theories change over the years based on the latest research. Just consider the low fat craze. In the 90’s fat was considered evil so people eliminated ALL fat from their diets only to find out years later that certain fats are actually necessary for optimal health which is the reason nuts and omega 3 supplements are now so popular. Sensible Weight Loss Tips #1: Ask yourself if the diet you’re considering seems extreme. Does banning an entire food make sense to you? Is your decision to try the latest diet based on your needs or what everybody else seems to be doing? Think before you act. You might find that a more moderate approach (moderating fat vs. eliminating it) works better in the long run.

The Latest Diet Trends WILL Be Replaced
If you suggested the low carb craze would replace the low fat diet while the low fat diet trend was going strong you would have been considered insane but that’s exactly what happened. Can you predict what’s coming next? You probably have no idea what diet trend will prevail in the next decade so maybe being so gung ho about the latest diet isn’t such a great idea. Sensible Weight Loss Tips #2: Ask yourself if the diet you’re considering is sensible? Can you see yourself following this diet for the rest of your life? How about for the next 5 years? If the answer is no then you need to reconsider whether a more sensible approach (less processed carbs and more exercise vs. no or low carb) might work better for your weight loss and health long term.

Diet Trends Do Not Guarantee Weight Loss
Have you ever seen those crazy infomercials for weight loss programs or exercise gadgets on t.v.? There’s usually a disclaimer at the end that reads "Results Not Typical". The latest diet trends should also come with a similar disclaimer since a majority of people who try them get no results. Just look at the percentage of people in America who are overweight or obese and compare that to the amount of money spent yearly on diets or diet products. If these diet trends worked so well the diet industry would not be thriving and a majority of the population would be healthy by now. Sensible Weight Loss Tips #3: Ask yourself if there is a way for you to lose weight without having to go on the latest diet. Do you really need another diet or do you just need to be more active or cut back on junk food a bit? Do you really need the latest diet or do you need to get more sleep, reduce stress, or get happy again so you stop turning to food for comfort? Remember that losing weight isn’t just about the food you eat it’s also about living a healthier happier life.
