May Day is a holiday that has different meanings for different cultures and countries. It’s celebrated the first day of May, that’s the common denominator. Throw in the fact that it’s spring, now we have a spring holiday, what better time to have a party? May Day is also a day of political protest for organized labor. In other countries and cultures it’s recognized as a saint’s feast day and a neopagan celebration. No matter the country or cause it’s still a time to party.

The Invitation - Make cones from construction or scrapbook paper and fill with small flowers or petals and leave in guest mailboxes or have someone deliver them in person if possible. If time is short an invitation by phone is acceptable.

Attire - Since this is normally an impromptu gathering there is no special attire that is required. During spring, most people will be shedding the heavy and darker colors of winter and will more than likely dress in lighter colors.

The Decoration - Use lots of fresh flowers and houseplants in clay pots and or brightly colored watering cans. Check your local craft stores for these as well as wooden crates in different sizes.

For a beautiful centerpiece, place an opened child’s umbrella in the center of the table and fill it with silk flowers. Most craft stores also sell colored lunch bags and these would be great for luminaries to line the walkway leading to the entrance of the party. To reduce any fire hazard use flameless tea lights.

Activities - If you want to take the May Day theme to the next extreme, decorate a May Pole with torn pieces of brightly colored fabric or streams and have guests dance around it. Depending on the beverages you serve this idea may or may fly.

The Menu - Keep it light and keep it simple.

Sandwich Bar

• Assorted breads, buns and rolls


• Deli meats


• Assortment of sliced cheeses


• Lettuce


• Slices of red onions, pickles and tomatoes


• Red, green and yellow peppers


• Pepperocini and jalapeno slices


• Yellow and deli mustards


• Mayonnaise, regular and flavored


• Catsup


• Balsamic vinaigrette

Round out the menu with your choice of the following salads:

• Tossed


• Potato


• Coleslaw


• Pasta

Dessert - Let party goers choose from cupcakes, ice cream sandwiches, homemade cookies, cake pops or doughnuts.

Wash it all down with lemonade, Pinot Noir or Pinot Grigio.

Wrap several cookies in parchment paper, tie with brightly colored bakers twine and pass them out as favors.
