Kittens and Cats Books
Children love kittens and cats. They love to play with them. Kids enjoy the pouncing, rolling and swatting animals. Best of all, they love to cuddle and sleep with the warm balls of fur.
Studies show children read more when the book’s subject is of interest to them. Here is a short list of children books with kittens and cats. Kitten’s First Full Moon is by Kevin Henkes. This cute kitten sees her first moon. She thinks it is a bowl of milk. She is determined to drink the milk. This kitten jumps, paws and leaps to reach the desired liquid treasure.
April’s Kittens is by Clare Turlay Newberry. April lives in an apartment with her cat and parents. The cat becomes a momma. Now there is a cat plus three kittens in the small apartment. Which ones will she have to give away and to whom?
Barney and the Kitten (Korowan wa Oniichan) is by Hisako Madokoro. It is an English translation of a Japanese picture book. Barney helps a lost kitten find her mother. Children love the friendship between the dog and kitten. Like Barney, they too want to help the lost kitten.
Sly the Sleuth and the Pet Mysteries is by Donna Jo Napoli and Robert Furrow. Sly’s cat, Taxi, is her assistant in the detective’s agency. Taxi helps Sly with her cases. Every detective needs a capable assistant and Taxi fits the bill. Children love to join Taxi and Sly on cases to solve mysteries.
Kitten for a Day (Picture Puffins) Ezra Jack Keats writes a picture book where a dog decides he is a kitten. He meows, pounces and does other things like a cat.
Barry Saltzberg writes and illustrates the picture book I Love Cats. Infants and toddlers love the sing song pattern. Kids learn pre-literacy skills while they enjoy a bedtime book.
Award winner, Arnold Lobel, writes the nursery rhymes in Whiskers & Rhymes. The kids' book of poetry are for children between four and eight-years-old. Whiskers & Rhymes contains short humorous poems about cats.
Mummies in the Morning, Magic Tree House Book #3 takes Jack and Annie to Ancient Egypt. A black cat helps the siblings on their Morgan Le Fay’s mission. A black cat is not bad luck in the Mary Pope Osborne’s early chapter book, is a lifesaver.
