Afternoon on the Amazon- Magic Tree house book #6 by Mary Pope Osborne

Today, Annie and Jack run to climb the ladder to their magic tree house. Annie wants to see if Peanut is still there. Peanut is the little mouse that helped them in Night of the Ninjas. Luckily, she is still there in Annie's sock just waiting for them. Their adventure today takes them to the Amazon River Valley. This is the first time Annie is not sure if she really wants to go- because she doesn't like bugs! The tree house is a gift from Morgan le Fay, but a spell has been cast on Morgan le Fay. They want to help, but it is with a little reluctance that they go, even they know they need to gather the items needed to break the spell. Once again Peanut will accompany them by traveling in Annie's pocket.

Jack and Annie’s magic tree house lands on the forest canopy, but they think they have landed on the ground and wonder because the tree house has always landed in a tree... Jack looks up facts in the book and finds they are actually 150 ft. above the forest floor. They carefully descend to the ground where they find many huge trees with hanging vines. Luckily, the ground-cover hides all the creepy, crawly creatures.

Afternoon on the Amazon Magic Tree House Book #6 introduces children to the rain forests of the Amazon River Valley. The hot, moist climate is overwhelming to Jack and Annie. Annie is worried about bugs! They have quite the adventure as they experience army ants, vampire bats, crocodiles and jaguars as they travel down the Amazon River. They see piranhas and snakes and monkeys. They learn the the Amazon River is over 4000 miles long.

The book flows smoothly although Jack needs to stop and check the book for facts often. They encounter many new plants, animals and situations and that helps to keep interest for the children reading the book. Jack and Annie find a mango in the Amazon Rain Forest, with the aid of the helpful monkey. Mango starts with the letter M so they know it is one of their clues. When they return home they place it on the "M" on the floor of the tree house with the other clues before they go home.

Afternoon on the Amazon book #6 and "Try some mangoes!"
