April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. This is a good time to remember that child abuse is more than hitting a child. Child abuse comes in many forms, including cruel teasing, hurling unforgivable words and, emotional and physical neglect.

Monthly Events

Alcohol Awareness Month. April 1-30. To help raise awareness among community prevention leaders and citizens about the problem of underage drinking. For more information, browse www.ncadd.org.

Child Abuse Prevention Month. April 1-30. A month dedicated to understanding and eradicating the causes and practices of child abuse. For more information, browse www.preventchildabuse.com.

National Donate Life Month. April 1-30. Formerly known as National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week, but has been expanded to a full month. To encourage Americans to consider organ and tissue donation and to sign donor cards when getting a driver’s license. National Poetry Month. April 1-30. To pay tribute to the great legacy and ongoing achievement of American poets and the vital place of poetry in American culture. For more information, browse www.poets.org.

Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month. April 1-30. Sponsored by the ASPCA to educate Americans about animal cruelty and to urge them to report any instance of violence toward animals. For more information, browse www.aspca.org.


Weekly Events

National Library Week April. 15-21. National Library Week is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries, librarians and library workers and to promote library use and support. Daily Events

April Fools’ or All Fools’ Day. April 1. New Year’s Day used to be April 1, but was changed to Jan. 1 in 1564. People who insisted on celebrating the “old” New Year became knows as “April fools,” and it became common to play jokes and tricks on them.

Easter Sunday. April 8. Christian festival to commemorate the resurrection of Christ.

National Library Workers Day. April 17. The Allied Professional Association of the American Library Association (ALA-APA) annually sponsors National Library Workers Day, which falls on the Tuesday of National Library Week. The purpose is to recognize all library workers, including librarians, support staff and others who make library service possible every day.
