Barry's Boxing in Las Vegas
"We teach the science, not the violence." That's the mantra of Barry's Boxing in Las Vegas, and it seems to have paid off at last Saturday night's big boxing event at the Texas Station Casino. Sponsored by Top Rank, FSN and Fox Espanol, the evening featured seven bouts of sweaty excitement and bloody brawls.
Top Rank turned out to be top notch, converting the Dallas Events Center into a laboratory of the sweet science of jabs, hooks, and upper-cuts. I've been to other fights before and can honestly say that the array of talent at this event was truly impressive.
So, what's a nice girl like me doing at a rough and tumble boxing match? My two youngest sons have been training at Barry's Boxing for the past year and wanted to cheer on their fellow boxing brothers, Jesse and Diego Magdaleno. From the sound of the audience in the room, just about everyone else there wanted to do the same. "Jesse! Jesse! Jesse!" was chanted over and over while the younger of the Magdaleno brothers pummeled Cain Garcia.
When it came to Diego's turn, the room shook with a unified chorus of "Diego's House! Diego's House! Diego's House!" And it was. Both Jesse and Diego knocked out their opponents in explosive wins.
Saturday night was only Jesse's second fight of his professional career, crushing his competition. Diego took home the NABF Super Featherweight title, after winning blows to Marcos Jimenez. The crowd went wild and my
sons were beaming with pride. It was a big night for Barry's Boxing.
Pat and Dawn Barry are passionate boxing fans and the owners of Barry's Boxing. Pat began his professional boxing career in New York City and later met Dawn, who was one of the first female professional boxing
managers in the business. They worked together in law enforcement for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for many years, until Dawn recently retired and started managing their boxing center full-time.
Their daughter, also named Dawn, is married to Augie "Kid Vegas" Sanchez, who is the most decorated Amateur Boxer in Nevada's history. Augie currently leads the coaching staff at Barry's Boxing and trains all of their elite boxers. I can tell you on a personal note that he was very supportive when one of my sons gathered the courage to compete in his first bout a few months ago.
We can continue to expect great things out of Barry's Boxing Center. You probably won't be seeing my sons' names on the marquees any time soon, but we'll all be in the audience cheering on the champs from this terrific training gym in Las Vegas.
