Max Elliot Anderson writes the Secret of Abbott’s Cave. It is part of the Tweener Press Adventure Series. Mr. Anderson creates his books for the reluctant reader between the ages eight to twelve. He supplies plenty of suspense. Tweens read and return for more of the series’ action-packed books.

In the Secret of Abbott’s Cave, Randy, Stewart, Jeff and Hal are friends. They are the four members of the Hilton Park Road Detective Club. The friends plan to solve neighborhood crimes. Club members buy a police scanner. They listen to it during club meetings. One day, the friends hear of a bank robbery. The robbers are on the loose!

Randy, Jeff, Hal and Stewart leave to explore a cave on Jeff’s uncle’s property. Friday, they have a camp out before the next day’s cave exploration. During the night, the club members are awakened from a deep sleep. Club members spy who they think are the bank robbers. It is decided, in the morning, they will give the cave a quick check. Afterwards, they will tell Jeff’s uncle about the men they saw.

The adventurous club members slither into the cave with a little difficulty. Soon, they completely forget about the men and the money. Exploration is so interesting. Unfortunately, the men did not forget about the robbery money. Money, that is now in the explorers’ procession. The cave chase is on!

Max Elliot Anderson uses the dialogue to tell the story. There is no long descriptive text to slow the action. The sentences are short. Secret of Abbott’s Cave will have the middle-reader's hair standing on end. And, the Secret of Abbott Cave ends with the tween learning a lesson.

The tween book interested in cave exploration. Hal, Randy, Jeff and Stewart prepare themselves before going in the cave. Research is done on the internet. They attend a park-sponsored cave preparedness program. Also, middle-readers who are interested in the 10-codes used by the police and fire departments will love the book. There is a list for Hampton, Virginia area at the book’s end. The tween reader’s local area 10-codes are available on the internet.

Randy and his eleven-year-old friends not only attend the local school together, but Sunday school, too. Therefore, there is talk about God and Jesus in the Secret of Abbott’s Cave.

I recommend Max Elliot Anderson’s Secret of Abbott’s Cave. Share the book with an eight to twelve-year-old. Don’t be surprised that the 126-paged book is quickly read. There are plenty of subjects for the tween to ponder: cave exploration, safety, religion and citizenship.
