Some Modern Mystery Movies
The 21st century has seen the making of some excellent mystery movies; some of them sure to become the classics of tomorrow. Here is a selection of mysteries, made over the past twelve years that have had a great impact on this mystery movie reviewer.
The Prestige (2006)
Starring Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale and Scarlett Johansson, The Prestige tells the story of two good friends who become bitter enemies. When both men become famous magicians, one man is determined to solve the mystery of the other’s greatest trick.
Unbreakable (2000)
After his success in The Sixth Sense, Bruce Willis stars in another M Night Shyamalan movie, with a similar mixture of drama and supernatural mystery. Here Willis plays a man who emerges without a scratch from a train wreck that killed every other passenger. Soon afterwards he is approached by a mysterious stranger, played by Samuel L Jackson, who has an extraordinary theory about this miraculous escape.
The Secret in Their Eyes (2009)
Ricardo Darin and Soledad Villamil star in this Argentinian mystery. A retired federal agent is writing a novel based on a case he investigated twenty-five years earlier. The case had affected him deeply at the time, and even now there is still one more mystery to solve.
The Illusionist (2006)
This movie is set in 19th century Vienna, and follows the love story of two young people separated by social class. Years later they meet again, after the young man has become a master of illusion. In order to save his true love from marriage to an abusive man, the illusionist must use all his mysterious gifts. Edward Norton and Jessica Biel star in this tale of love, mystery and political intrigue.
The Others (2001)
This supremely spooky movie stars Nicole Kidman as the mother of two young children who have a rare condition that makes them unable to tolerate sunlight. Retiring to a large house on the island of Jersey, the family await the return of the soldier father from service in the Second World War. All is not as it seems, though, and when the mother employs a trio of household servants, events are set in place to reveal a shocking mystery.
These movies are just a few of the best mystery movies made during the years since the turn of the 21st century. It is good to know that the mystery genre is as popular now as it was in the days of the great classic mysteries. I look forward to reviewing these, and more, modern mysteries in future articles.
