Is Your Family Bored?
Are you feeling bored? Kid's are not the only ones to feel the creep of boredom, but they may be the only ones to confess "Mommy, I am bored." And good for them, how can you do something about boredom if you can't or are not willing to acknowledge it? Even worse if you don't realize you are bored, you may think it is something else, instead of simple, easily fixed boredom. When you are bored, it is hard to be happy or creative. Boredom can make you feel restless and faintly unhappy. When more than one person asks you what's wrong and you don't have an answer or your answer is vague, chances you are in need of new stimulation.
Boredom can hit at anytime, with children it can be quite frequent so it is up to the parent to find or keep something handy for young children's attention span. Don't allow your families lives to be all about technical items or television. Why not get back to board games and card games. You would be surprised how long these items can hold the attention and interest of an enthusiastic game player. Hands-on games are not only stimulating, when they require two or more people to be in the same room at the same time, you get a chance to hold real conversations and appreciate one-on-one interaction. So bring out the board games and engage the whole family in old fashioned fun. What about planning a family fun night? Use the time to reconnect with family members and instead of texting LOL you can actually laugh out loud and have an old fashioned good time. You may find you enjoy having a real conversation. If mom or dad say's I am too tired, no problem just ask her or him to stay in the same room with the family fun; you may be surprised and get another player.
You can have family fun in the kitchen too. Instead of picking up dinner from the fast food restaurant or making dinner as usual, try something new. You probably do not want to try all new foods but you could make pizza, it does not have to be from scratch, just buying the fixings and getting the family involved will be fun. This is not the time to be too particular about how or where the toppings are placed. Just have a good time building the pizza and baking it.
Next time you hear the words, "I am bored," take a step on the wild side and delve back to another decade, you'll find there is fun to be had.
