As a summer tatting project tatters in the Online Tatting Class have been rewriting and modernizing the patterns in this vintage tatting book. Diagrams and new models have been prepared to help the tatter follow the patterns more easily. Both the original public domain booklet and the new version are being posted online to share with all tatters everywhere.
The header for this design is a familiar design. It is constructed of opposing rings and chains and repeated for the length desired. It can be used to attach the tatting to cloth and was often used for insertions. Make the line of heart shaped motifs first and join the lower rings of the header to the picots on the motif.

Join second motif to first by the first picot on the first chain.
To add interest and texture to the header, vary the type of chain tatted. Try a twisted chain, rick rack or node stitch.
