Fans who follow the Women’s Murder Club series by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro, may remember from the last installment that Lindsay is pregnant. The 12th of Never opens to extremely bad weather and Lindsay going into labor early, resulting in a crew of firemen coming to her house and delivering a baby girl named Julie. To add to the melodrama, Julie has some life-threatening problems that keep Lindsay and Joe near her in the hospital around the clock. Joe has lost his job, and Lindsay is needed at the station where there are some bizarre murders that have been predicted by a professor who has experienced the murders in his dreams.
In addition, Fay Farmer, a well-known designer and girlfriend of a famous football player has been found murdered in her car; he is the prime suspect, but the body has mysteriously disappeared from the morgue. Clair’s boss calls another medical examiner in, and Claire is temporarily demoted. Yuki is prosecuting a clear-cut case of an unscrupulous lawyer murdering his wife; his daughter is also missing, but the case is dismissed on a technicality. Richie and Cindy break up and Richie starts dating a new, attractive cop in the department.
As is typical of James Patterson books, there is a little too much melodrama; Maxine Paetro doesn’t usually put too much in when she is co-author, but The 12th of Never has a little more than usual, as well as plenty of grisly and violent murders, and puzzling scenarios. There is, however, enough suspense while Lindsay is investigating, to satisfy the fans of this series, and Lindsay and others encounter close calls on their lives throughout the novel.
While The Women’s Murder Club Series is not destined to go down in history as classic literature, those of us who like following the characters will enjoy this book. It’s a quick read with some surprises near the end.
