Grand Opening
The day finally arrives on May 3, 2014 a sunny and mild day perfect for the Grand Opening of the Mill Creek Country Club. It was a much anticipated event in Salado for a long time and now it is history. I cannot express how hard people worked to bring this day to happen and no one more than Bill and Vicky Helm. I have never seen anyone work harder to make this golf course come to pass than these two. We should all be grateful to them and their fellow owners for bringing life back to this golf course.

The day started with a putting contest at 1 o’clock followed by a two person scramble at 2:00 with 90 players involved. The scramble paired two people with the same handicap to make up the flights. J. L.Lewis our Pro handled the scramble and posting their scores and highlighting the winners of lst, 2nd and 3rd positions. Golfers hung around the score boards to see who finished as winners.
J.L. posted scores of players came in.
My table was set up inside the front door entry way to welcome those from the Mill Creek Community Association who had made reservations with me for the Frjita dinner. They were invited to come at 6:00 p.m. as the dinner was served at 7:00. This made the dining room quite crowded as the line developed for the dinner went out the Pro Shop door. The line closed off the entrance door as more people came, a few then decided not to stay for dinner as the line was so long. The many people who ate noted that the dinner was excellent. When I say the Helm’s are hard workers they prepared the Frjitas in the new kitchen with help of staff and friends. It was amazing that they would attempt this for the Grand Opening but it shows how much they care for this club.
Where I checked off guest who were on my reservation list.
The golfers waited to get in the line for the Frjita dinner
Guests who stayed until after 8:30 p.m. were treated to a lighting show of colored lights on the newly installed water fountain in the pond. Many displayed pleasure and talked about the colorful lights lighting the fountain. This seemed to highlight the sky and the water when it changed colors. This made a wonderful show for the guest.
The colored lights came on at 8:30 p.m. I was too far away will have to get closer next time.
Most of the guest who made a reservation with me for the Frijta meal showed up, I don’t know is they all made it through the line but I am sure they did. It was a great day and everything will get back to normal golf course business. Billy Helm has said he would have the crew start on the bridge going to number one and ten golf holes. He also said they would be getting back to finishing up the work on the golf course. I am mighty proud of knowing the Helms and seeing how hard they are working to make this golf course a big success.
