Celebration of Gospel Gets New Host
Steve Harvey is not hosting BET's Celebration of Gospel this year, instead the network tapped DC native and Academy Award® nominated actress Taraji P. Henson. Henson takes over the hosting duties from Steve Harvey who hosted "Celebration of Gospel" for 13 years.
Henson is best known for her many television and film roles including; Yvette in Baby Boy and Queenie in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2009.
A Howard University alumnus, where she received her degree in theater arts, Henson uprooted her family to move to Los Angeles from her hometown of Washington, D.C., so she should could fully pursue her acting career. They had $700 dollars to their name. To date, she has starred in over 20 films and TV series, each a testament to her dreams coming true. The move demonstrated Henson's faith and with the theme of the show being Forward in Faith, she should host the event very well.
The show will feature several collaborations between Gospel and R&B artists including “American Idol” winner Ruben Studdard, “Sunday Best” winner LeAndria Johnson, and soulful crooner Kem. Acoustic soul artist India.Arie will team up with Christian contemporary artist Jonathan McReynolds for a special performance. Female R&B group SWV and the Rance Allen Group will also join together to anoint the crowd through song.
The show will also include duets by Donnie McClurkin and Tye Tribbett; Lalah Hathaway and Zacardi Cortez; and Chante Moore and Vashawn Mitchell. A tribute to gospel music pioneer and living legend Richard Smallwood and rousing spoken word pieces from Pastor Shirley Caesar and Dr. Bobby Jones will be some of the show's highlights.
