Marriage isn’t what it’s all cracked up to be when a young woman becomes the second wife of a wealthy man. But Mrs. Danvers, who’s in charge of running the De Winter’s household, makes it her mission to make the new Mrs. De Winter’s life as miserable as possible as long as she lives at Manderlay. Here are a few movie mistakes to look for in Alfred Hitchcock’s Oscar winning “Rebecca”.

· After the future Mrs. De Winter first meets Maxim, she is sitting in the hotel lounge with Mrs. Van Hooper. At first the future Mrs. De Winter is holding her coffee cup in her right hand. But in the very next view of her, she’d holding a newspaper in her right hand and she’s holding her coffee cup with her left hand in her lap.

· Maxim and his new wife are taking a stroll along the grounds of Manderlay. Their dog Jasper runs off to the cottage on the beach. At first Jasper is barking and standing in front of the door. In the next view, after the new Mrs. De Winter says “there you are”, Jasper is laying flat on the ground, across the bottom of the door.

· Mrs. De Winter is sitting at the desk when she accidentally hits a small statue, causing it to crash to the floor. The pieces of the statue change places between the time they’re first shown on the floor and when Mrs. De Winter picks them up.

· When Mrs. De Winter walks into the study to work on her correspondence, there are three books on the desk. One book is titled “Menus” and is on the left side of the desk while the one labeled “Addresses” is in the middle. When she walks to the desk, Mrs. de Winter picks up the book on the left side of the desk, which should have been the one labeled “Menus” but the close-up shows she is actually looking through the one titled “Addresses”.

· CAUTION: May Contain Spoilers! When Maxim is confessing to his wife in the cottage, he lights a cigarette and sits on the corner of the couch. At first there are newspapers lying on the couch. But when Maxim walks to the door, Mrs. de Winter looks and there is now an ashtray filled with cigarettes on the middle cushion that wasn’t there before.

“Rebecca” (1940) is based on the novel by Daphne Du Maurier and was directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It stars Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine and Judith Anderson. It runs 130 minutes and is not rated.
