Hack Genealogy Review

Hack Genealogy Review
There is a new genealogy website I want to share with you, Hack Genealogy. On their website we read, “Hack Genealogy is about “re-purposing today’s technology for tomorrow’s genealogy” and a little bit more. The genealogy community has historically lagged behind other communities and industries in the way in which it embraces technology to advance their work. Hack Genealogy is more than just a list of resources. Hack Genealogy provides information on emerging technology inside and outside the genealogy industry. Hack Genealogy wants readers to understand how others are using technology to succeed.

The hacking of genealogy doesn’t always have to involve high tech . . . it could involve something as “old school” as creating a better filing system for genealogy-related documents or what to pack for a genealogy research trip. Each and every day, genealogists are finding new and innovative ways to pursue their family history passion whether it involves a Smartphone or just smart thinking.”

If you think like me, the word “hacking” may bring scary images of someone getting your information, etc. But, the term is used differently in this situation. "Instead, we follow the more modern use: think of someone who takes an item and uses it outside of its normal usage boundaries or constructs a new tool based on old tools."

Here are some things Hack Genealogy will cover:
  • Cool Gen Stuff
  • Discussion & Issues
  • Education
  • E-Guides
  • GenBiz Buzz
  • How Do You Hack Genealogy
  • Product Reviews
  • Resources
  • Videos

One of my favorite features on this website is the “How I Hack Genealogy?” Genealogists are chosen to participate and are asked their name, position, organization they belong to, their personal website, age, residence and websites they participate in. Then the section that is of great use is asking them about the Technology they use: Hardware, Cloud Storage, Back up Program and Routine, Printer used, if they use paper, paperless or in between, email, smartphone, mobile apps, E-readers, web browser, virus protection, firewalls, genealogy database programs, blogs and much more.

Another great feature is the Hack Genealogy Blog. This blog is a great way to read some great interviews, keep up with technology, genealogy research tips and much more.

Thomas MacEntee of Geneabloggers and High-Definition Genealogy is the administrator to this great new website. I look forward to each new post!
