Toddler Taken Hostage at Wal-Mart
A young mother in Midwest City, Oklahoma goes shopping with her twelve year old and two year old daughters at the local Wal-Mart last week July 2, 2013. She does everything right, keeping the youngest daughter safely in the shopping cart seat. The older sibling stays with mom and the shopping cart the whole time.
When mom turns toward the store shelves looking for an item, a large African American male appearing agitated and possibly psychotic walks up to the shopping cart and lifts the two year old out of her seat. The older daughter watches in horror as the man walks down the aisle. The mother realizing what just happened confronts the man.
She pleads for him to return her daughter and becomes agitated when she sees he is holding a knife to the little girl’s stomach. The whole situation etched forever in history as the store’s video surveillance cameras capture everything from start to finish.
A Good Samaritan intervenes by keeping the male with the knife from leaving or walking up the aisle with the child. He uses his shopping cart on the perpetrators’ left side. He is careful to keep the shopping cart between him and the knife wielding man.
As the mother pleads for her daughter’s life a News Channel 5 (newsnet5.com) article reported, “Frightened onlookers called 911 to report the hostage situation. Once at the scene, swat teams and police officers evacuated the store to begin negotiations with Wallace.”
Police try to negotiate with the kidnapper, but he is not willing to work with police. The video shows one officer gets Wallace a chair to sit down and relax. The real reason for the chair police say was to make the immobile. Authorities are able to identify the man. He is Sammie Wallace. Wallace lives in Texas, and he has a lengthy rap sheet of violent crimes.
The man moves the blade to the little girl’s throat. He begins to count down (from 60) and tells officers when he gets to zero something terrible will happen to the little girl. A police negotiator to the man’s left begins talking to Wallace distracting him. Then the officer kneeling in front of the man stands walks over and shots him in the head.
The toddler is safe. The ordeal is over. The mother takes her children home safely. However, in just a couple of seconds a child’s life hung precariously in danger. Why Sammie Wallace took the little girl, prisoner no one will know. This mother was doing everything right. She kept her children well supervised.
I just cannot imagine what the outcome for a child or children running unattended in the store might have been if they met up with Sammie Wallace. Never allow children roam a large store like Wal-Mart alone or with a sibling, what happened in Midwest City Oklahoma could happen anywhere.
