Asymmetrical Quilts Book Review

Asymmetrical Quilts Book Review

Leisure Arts has a wonderful collection of quilt books for quilters of all skill levels. I have been fortunate enough to receive complimentary copies from time to time from the publisher, and have the pleasure of reviewing them for my readers.

I recently received a great Leisure Arts publication titled Asymmetrical Quilts. This book is authored by Phyllis Dobbs, a prolific quilt designer and patchwork fabric designer. She has a wonderful website where a large number of free patterns await your download. (See link at the bottom of this article).
The concept of Asymmetrical Quilts lies somewhere between traditional quilt making and the creating of Art Quilts.

Traditional quilts usually consist of a symmetrical design, where the quilt top design is well proportioned and balanced and of equal design. Art Quilts often highlight the feature of asymmetrical design elements where the quilt top is designed with a lop-sided aspect, and the final design outcome is unbalanced, but yet pleasing to the eye.

Phyllis Dobbs has taken this design element of Asymmetrical to a new level and has actually used traditional block designs in a very non-traditional assembly and the result is an extremely pleasing composition that really makes these quilts quite unique.

Phyllis Dobbs has also used some very quirky appliqué motifs and patterns to enhance these off centre blocks using a clever use of color and pattern that results in the most delightful quilt patterns that I’ve seen for some time.
This asymmetrical concept is very unique, and is achievable for all skill levels from the novice quilter to the more highly developed skills of an advance quilter.

Leisure Arts is renowned for its professional approach to publishing terrific craft books, and their quilting book collection is no exception.

Asymmetrical Quilt is full of wonderful photographs. Phyllis’s instructions are very clear and concise, and she uses user friendly language throughout the publication. Nine very different pattern ideas are offered here, and include quilts, table toppers and wall hanging ideas. One of the characteristic of any Leisure Arts publication is the attention to detail that is given to the graphic instructions. The drawings and images are clear and easy to understand.

At the back of this publication, great effort has gone into a “General Instructions” section which not only covers the usual techniques that quilters require to finish these patterns, but some of the more complicated techniques that are used to complete a quilt such as finishing or binding the quilt. The instructions here are very clear and easy to understand – a gold star for effort is awarded, in my opinion.

I really like this publication, Asymmetrical Quilts. Phyllis Dodds and Leisure arts have taken the time to bring a really excellent publication to the libraries of quilters. I can totally recommend this book to quilters everywhere.
