What is Biscornu
Just like anything, embroidery has trends and one of the latest trends is for Biscornu.
To answer the question – Biscornu is a thing! More to the point, it’s an embroidered thing. They are usually an eight sided pillow that can be as small as a charm for a mobile phone or as large as a sofa cushion. The usual size is one that fits comfortably in the palm of your hand.
Translated from French, Biscornu means an “irregular shape with projections” or an oddity.
These charming pieces are embroidered, and can be made out of any fabric you want and that you feel comfortable embroidering on. There are no rules for the technique or designs used – so you can make them completely individual.

Most Biscornu are finished off with a button in the top, and can be filled with either fibre fill, emery powder (if you wanted to make an emery bag for sharpening pins and needles) or herbs/potpourri to make a sweet smelling bag to put amongst linens.
The Biscornu are made from two squares of fabric the same size that you embroider and then stitch together.

Biscornu can be a great way to use up smaller pieces of fabric from your stash, and can be easy to make projects when you have a few spare hours and don’t want to work on something larger.
They give you the chance to be incredibly creative with your stitching and make great gifts.
Biscornu can also be used as home decorations – instead of a glass vase with flowers, why not make some small flower embroidered Bsicornu, fill them with potpourri and drop inside the glass vase, or in a glass bowl. All the beauty and fragrance of flowers, but everlasting!
I would suggest that you make your biscornu so that you can open them up at one side so that you can re-stuff or launder them as you need.
