The Severing Crime Edge (which is known in Japan as Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge) is based on a manga written and illustrated by Tatsuhiko Hikagi.

The protagonist of the series is Kiri Haimura, and on the surface he appears to be an ordinary boy. However, there is something unusual about him: he is obsessed with cutting other people's hair.

At school, he hears a rumor about a mansion near a bus stop where there's supposed to be a ghost girl with long hair. One day, Kiri gets off at the wrong stop, which just happens to be the same one that's referenced in the rumor. He sees a girl with very long and dark hair, and he decides that he has to cut it. Kiri manages to injure himself instead, and the girl brings him inside the mansion.

Kiri learns that the girl's name is Iwai Mushanokoji, and that she is cursed because no one has ever been able to cut her hair. Kiri explains that his hobby his cutting hair, and that he used to cut everyone's hair in his family, until they decided to have that done at salons instead. Kiri is determined to cut Iwai's hair, but every pair of scissors she provides him with won't cut it. But for whatever reason, Kiri doesn't try using the pair of scissors he has on him that he was going to use when he wanted to cut Iwai's hair when he first saw her. They are interrupted by the arrival of two young women, who make Kiri leave the mansion. They warn Kiri to stay away, because he might die if he hangs around Iwai.

He also comes to learn that one of his ancestors was a murderer who used scissors to cut up his victims. Kiri suspects the scissors he has are the same scissors, and he goes to visit Iwai. After explaining things, Iwai lets him try to cut her hair with his scissors; Kiri is successful. At the end of the first episode, it's hinted that Kiri is now involved in some kind of game.

If this premise sounds bizarre, that's because it is. The execution of the story in the first episode also comes across as rather bizarre and creepy. The protagonist comes across as a rather weird person very early on in the episode, and my opinion of him never improved by the time the episode ended. I couldn't find any reason to want to root for this character.

Between the creepy protagonist and the overall concept of the series, I feel I have no reason to want to pursue this series any further. I'm not quite sure who the target audience for this series is, but I can guarantee that I'm not it.

Personally, I would recommend The Severing Crime Edge to anime viewers who are 15 or 16 years of age and older.
